Prepare for surgery
Understandably surgery can naturally provoke anxiety as unfamiliar situations can cause anxiety and panic. You might also be worried about things like the outcome of the operation, a lack of control, how you’ll feel afterwards or what the recovery will be like. These emotions can be very concerning and can even lead you to cancelling or avoiding necessary medical or dental procedures.
Fear of the surgery itself can happen weeks or months before the date of surgery caused by the hospital environment, fear of needles, injections or general anaesthetic, surgery outcome, the possible psychological distress caused during recovery and the ability to make full recovery, can all cause immense physical reactions in the body and mind.
“Surgery is very often accompanied by feelings of stress and anxiety”.
The stress and anxiety it causes has a negative effect on our immune system and our body’s ability to heal itself. It can cause more pain, an increased need for painkillers, and longer time spent in hospital after surgery. Anxiety can lead to poorer recovery and people who are anxious before surgery have considerably more fatigue, tension, and pain three months later than those who were not anxious. Worry before the operation causes a higher heart rate and blood pressure changes before and during the procedure, were more difficult to anesthetize, and were more likely to experience headache, vomiting, and pain afterward.
How can Hypnotherapy help me prepare for surgery?
Hypnotherapy will allow you to feel comfortable and remove the fear about having the necessary surgery and just get the job done.
